چکیده

The base composition of DNA preparations from 16 strains of staphylococci, belonging to different subgroups, and from 10 staphylococcal phages were determined from the denaturation temperature (T') and from the buoyant density. The GC (guanine + cytosine) content of the DNA of the strains ranged from 29.3 to 33-9 % (calculated from Tm) and from 28.5 to 34-0 % (calculated from the buoyant density). No significant difference was observed between the GC content of the DNA of the strains of Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis nor between its various biotypes. The mole fraction GC of staphylococcal phage DNA (31.4 to 34-6 % GC) is somewhat higher than the GC content of the DNA of the strains.

Deoxyribonucleic acid base composition and biochemical properties of certain coagulase-negative enterotoxigenic cocci.

Eight coagulase-negative, enterotoxigenic strains of cocci and one weakly coagulase-positive strain isolated from a number of different sources, including cases of food poisoning incidents, were evaluated for their relationship to Staphylococcus aureus on the basis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) buoyant density and physiological studies. One strain of cocci produced enterotoxins A and C, two st...

First complete genome sequence of two Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteriophages.

Staphylococcus epidermidis is an important opportunistic pathogen causing nosocomial infections and is often associated with infections in patients with implanted prosthetic devices. A number of virulence determinants have been identified in S. epidermidis, which are typically acquired through horizontal gene transfer. Due to the high recombination potential, bacteriophages play an important ro...

Bacteriol. 90:136-140. 1965.-It had been previously proposed, from taxometric analyses, that gram-positive, catalase-positive cocci be divided into two subgroups. Thirteen strains, representative of both subgroups,...

Wall teichoic acid structure governs horizontal gene transfer between major bacterial pathogens

Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) encoding virulence and resistance genes are widespread in bacterial pathogens, but it has remained unclear how they occasionally jump to new host species. Staphylococcus aureus clones exchange MGEs such as S. aureus pathogenicity islands (SaPIs) with high frequency via helper phages. Here we report that the S. aureus ST395 lineage is refractory to horizontal gene ...

Transduction of tetracycline resistance in Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Fourteen Staphylococcus epidermidis strains were biotyped according to the scheme of Baird-Parker and tested for their sensitivities to S. epidermidis typing phages. Tetracycline-susceptible strains were tested for the capacity to be transduced to resistance. Five strains, all of biotype 1, were lysed by one or more phages. Five of eight biotype 1 strains were transduced to tetracycline resista...
